Shar Pei & Their Nutrition

Not all dog foods are same, in fact, their qualities vary quite significantly. However, the dog itself can declare the final verdict, when it comes about the quality of the dog food. Your dog may show a graceful response with progressively healthy body and nice temperament, if it is having good food. If it does not happen, no matter what its company claims, you are not feeding well your dog. Economy, Regular, Premium, Super Premium and Performance are different classes of dog foods.

Akin to other dog breeds, Shar Pei has a simple stomach structure along with short-sized digestive tract. In addition, Shar Pei does not saliva enzyme amylase, an integral component for pre-digesting starch. Shar Pei can be fed either vegetable protein or meat protein and animal fats, however, for the later the dog seems to be more active. Shar Pei nutrition counts on two points – (1) nutrient sources akin to original environment and (2) perfect balance of nutrients in food.

Shar Pei nutrition calls for vitamins and minerals exclusively added in the food. However, the nutritional source greatly differs for different breeds. When a specific calcium source works for Shar Pei, it may not be so healthy for other dogs. In fact, the amount of nutritional factors can only be determined after considering many factors including age, sex, activity level, weight, medical history, etc. For example, the vitamin B complex supplements may be needed in larger amounts for an active Shar Pei

As stated by many experienced breeders, homemade dog foods may also offer a perfect balance in Shar Pei nutrition. However, the food must be rich with fresh and quality ingredients without any preservatives. Native foods in association with excess supply of nutritional content are the essential requisites for preparing an ideal dog food for Shar Pei. While beets, sweet potatoes, rice, corn, wheat, poultry meats, oxen and pork are perfect native choice for Shar Pei, it should be rich with additional fiber and carbohydrate content as well. Stay away from avocado, potato, ocean fish, beef and lamb; they are not good for your dog.

So, when you really care about your Shar Pei nutrition, then possibly homemade foods probably have no alternative. Try these two recipes – Cheesy Garlic Crunchy and Peanut Butter Treats.
